What is the backstory on your Derby Name?

It took me months to decide on a derby name. I had several ideas...Barbed Wire, Barbarelia, SockHer Mom, but I wasn't sold on any of them. My coworker that talked me into trying derby said that she was mesmerized when she watched me skate.

When did you start roller derby?

I started in 2007.

Why did you start derby?

I loved session skating at the rink when I was younger. My uncle managed the skating rink, so I spent a lot of time watching my cousins speed skate. I was impressed and wanted to skate like them. When I heard about derby I had to try it.

Has your why changed over the years?

Yes. At first it was just something to do to be active. Now I do it for mental clarity. When I have my skates on life seems to pause and skating is all that matters for that brief moment in time. It's like hitting the refresh button for me.

Advice to new skaters!

You may not like or get along with everyone in the league or on your team. It's ok...there is an unspoken mutual respect and/or admiration for the skills, sport and league that it won't matter. #shutupandskate
