The Skills Assessment

Derby, Dance, Outdoor & Ramp Readiness

The skills assessment is a way for skaters and training staff to measure each skaters footwork, speed & agility progress. Measuring footwork, speed and agility helps give us a way to chart and celebrate each skaters progress.

Yellow /Level 1
Skaters passing level 1/Yellow  are eligible to start Roller Derby 101 and Dance On Skates training. Roller Derby Skaters are eligible to start learning formation skating skills and light contact training (no scrimmage)

Green /Level 2
Skaters training to play roller derby once they have 4 weeks of Roller Derby 101 and are passing the skills test by level 2/Green can transition into Roller Derby Rookie AKA Fresh Meat Training - and will be Eligible to be drafted to a home team, when spots are available.
).Level 2: Home Team Skater (Draftable) – Cleared for games but restricted to Blocker Only.

Pink /Level 3
Level 3: Full Contact – Cleared for all positions (Jammer/Pivot/Blocker). Eligible for Travel Team B.

  • 8 cone touches - sticky feet

  • 10 Cone touches - plow stops
  • 8 skater pushes forward
  • 8 skater pushes backwards
  • 10 cone touches - turnaround toe stops
  • 5 Laps 2Falls - 1:30 (Speed & Agility Training)
  • 5 Lap 1:10 (Dance On Skates Training)

Level 2 Derby Ready (Green )
Roller Derby Fresh Meat Training Ready!

Can Participate In:

  • Blocker Only.
  • With Training Team Clearance - Scrimmage practice.
  • With Training Team Clearance - Can sign up to skate a game!
  • And you GET A COOL SSRD Patch when passing the level 3 + Jumps

Level 3 Derby Ready (Pink)
Roller Derby Scrimmage Ready

Can Participate In:

  • Cleared for all positions (Jammer/Pivot/Blocker)
  • Skater Active members with at least 6 months of league experience who have reached the skill level to represent Southside in travel games.
     Travel Team B.

  • 16 skater pushes forward
  • 16 skater pushes backwards

  • 5 Laps 2Falls - 60 Seconds (Derby & Outdoor Skaters)

    Once you are passing Pink/ Level 3 you will start practicing the Level 3 Jumps
    if you are not passing Level 3 practice jumps with caution.

    • 20 squat jumps
    • 6 180s
    • 6 mohawks (hold landing for 1 second)
    • 6 Waltz jumps (hold landing for 1 second)
    • 6 bunny hops on each leg
    • 6 mapes - toe stop runs

      Women's National Level Team

      Can Participate In:

      • National Level Roller Derby Practices
      • World Skate/USA Roller Sports Rule
      • Flat & Banked Track Games
      • Can Tryout For Travel Team!

      If your are interested in trying out for the women's travel team, consider all the commitments below.

      1. Travel Team is a 4 month time commitment
      2. Travel Team tryouts TBA
      3. Must be a member of SSRD 
      4. Must commit to traveling and cost of traveling
      5. Must commit to SSRD Off Skate program 2 days a week (this will be team work out completed virtually each week with check ins an accountability) 
      6. Must commit to 3 on skate practices with team 3 days a week (Mon, Wed, Thurs)
      7. Must purchase travel team uniforms.
        If you can handle all that for for 4 months!
