Why I Derby! BAMBI
What is the backstory on your Derby Name?
Just watch me skate. I have always been clumsy. I can barely walk without stumbling sometimes. So imagine putting wheels underneath my feet. My long, flailing legs make me look like Bambi on ice. So, Bambi was my nickname at practice. Even though it’s not the most flattering names to be called in Derby, it stuck. Thankfully, skating has gotten easier, and I’m a tad bit more stable now.
When did you start roller derby?
I started derby March 2018. So I’m a little over a year into my skating career.
Why did you start derby?
Roller Derby came up at work one day. I knew very little about the sport, but I always thought the women who played looked strong and fierce. So of course, it was something I wanted to try! I’ve also been somewhat active for most of my life, so I was thinking it would be a new way to exercise. So a few coworkers of mine and I took the beginner class, and the rest is history.
Has your why changed since you started?
Yes and no. The women I play with are both strong and fierce. I have become stronger over the year I’ve been around. Also skating is an amazing form of exercise, and it keeps me active. However, if you had told me over a year ago I’d be on a team, skating bouts on a bank track, I probably would’ve laughed in your face. Derby challenges me. Skating will probably never be easy for me, and that’s why I’m still around. I love to push my limits. Plus, the women of SSRD building each other up, keeping each other sane, creating a unique bond, and just having loads of fun is what keeps me here. I love every minute of it.
