What is the backstory on your derby name?
“Blue” because I love the color blue, and I get a little blue sometimes because I have chronic depression. And “CHEEZ” because my government name is Bri… Like the cheese!
What do you do when you’re not playing roller derby?
When I’m not at derby practice, I’m a Medical Laboratory Scientist. I work in a lab, testing patient specimens and providing results so doctors can diagnose patients. I also spend time at the gym, with my cats, and with my hubby!
When did you start roller derby?
I started skating with SSRD in January 2023. I played my first game at the end of 2023. I joined the league just to skate. I wasn’t sure I would be interested in roller derby. I had previous skating experience, so I guess I stood out and I was persuaded to try it. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS I’VE MADE IN MY LIFE!
I do it now because it helps me stay fit and sane! Roller derby is my outlet for stress!! It has helped me feel more calm and confident in my everyday life! And the league is a sisterhood that I didn’t know I needed!
Advice to skaters just starting or sitting on the fence:
My advice:
- There is no such thing as failure, only results. There is no losing, only learning. So don’t ever be afraid to try!
- Just try it! It might be the very thing you need!
- In life in general, it’s all about perspective. You can choose to see challenges, or you can choose to see opportunities.
