Why I Play Roller Derby – Dolly B Rotten

South Side GirlsSkater Spotlight, Why I Derby

Why I Derby! BAMBI

What is the backstory on your Derby Name?

My derby name is inspired by the band, The Dollyrots 🐇, who did a cover of the song “Brand New Key”. This song was on Tater’s MySpace profile when I first discovered SSRD existed and I just couldn’t get it outta my head. more stable now. 😉

When did you start roller derby?

I went to watch my first roller derby scrimmage on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 — scrimmage ended early because it started snowing actually 🌨☃️❄️. I went to my first practice on Monday, December 15th and I’ve never looked back.

Why did you start derby?

I joined roller derby because I was looking for somewhere to build friendships but also joined for the exercise aspect as well.

Has your why changed over the years.

At the very core of my why, no, not much has changed. I still come to practice because this is where I can find my friends. I’ve been playing for awhile, so I do have friends who have now “retired”, but derby will always be a common meeting spot for quick reunions.

Nowadays, I also have to exercise outside of derby to keep up with the physical demands of the level of play our team is wanting to achieve. I definitely won’t get any technical or practical applications outside of derby practice, but I would say that most of my physical exercise is outside of practice 💁🏻‍♀️ funny how that happens, but it has made a world of difference in overall performance!

3 Things you wish you new when you started derby or Advice to new skaters.

1. You will always be your worst critic, but you can also be your biggest motivator. Keep your mental game strong and focused on what you *CAN* control.

2. If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again. Failure is not final, falling/inability to execute something “perfectly” does not denote failure. We just care if you care to try again. Try it again, we want you to succeed.

3. We will not always be motivated, so we must be disciplined. 100 for 100. Show up when you say you will, and if you can’t or don’t plan to, say so. Your team depends on you — you are important.
