Meet Harlow Haymaker #918
Harlow is a triple threat, Pivot, Blocker and Jammer and we just don't know what we would do without her on the track. We are thankful that she is an official 2015 Babe and we are proud to call her TEAMMATE! LuV, the BaBes
BB-What’s the story behind your derby name and number?
HH- Harlow Haymaker #918
BB-What position do you play?
HH- Primarily blocker, sometimes jammer
BB-How long have you been involved in Bank Track Roller Derby?
HH-Since May 2014
BB-Why did you sign up for South Side Roller Derby?
HH-I was on a break from school and found the Groupon for boot camp. I showed up and, despite falling straight on my tailbone the first week, I kept coming back & couldn’t get enough of derby.
BB-What is your day job?
HH-I’m a student at UH and work in an abortion clinic.
BB-How has roller derby improved your life?
HH-I am in better shape now. But, more importantly, I am more confident and outspoken. I know I can take hits, but I trust myself to get up and rally every time.
BB-Outside of roller derby and your day job what do you do for yourself and/or your community?
HH-I volunteer with a lot of progressive causes. I hand out condoms and do sex ed, work health fairs, voter registration, and GOTV/political work. I also foster cats, once in a while.
BB-What is your favorite movie?
HH-My favorite movie is Mulan. Badass heroine who proves her own agency.
BB-What is your favorite song?
HH-I really like Taylor Swift’s Style right now. I’m a white girl at heart.
BB-Who is your idol and why?
BB-If you could have any super power what would it be?
HH- My superpower would be kinetic absorption, the “ability to absorb forms of kinetic energy into oneself and utilize it in some way, such as by converting it into physical strength or using it to power energy blasts.” I’m finishing my degree in kinesiology, and I know this is pretty nerdy, but it would be super useful in derby!
BB-What are your personal goals as a skater for the 2015 season?
HH-My personal goals are to become a better blocker by improving my timing and taking hits better. I also want to improve my jamming.
BB-What are your team goals for the 2015 season?
HH-My goals for the team are to learn to trust each other. A lot of us are really new and we haven’t worked together for very long. I think if we can all rely on each other, a lot of our teamwork will fall into place. And I want us to win!
